Mary Halvorson Quintet At Firehouse 12 Tonight

Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson and her newest ensemble, the Mary Halvorson Quintet, will perform tonight at New Haven’s Firehouse 12 as part of the venue’s ongoing 2009 Fall Jazz Series.

The group, which adds two horns to the longstanding trio that recorded Ms. Halvorson’s highly regarded 2008 debut, Dragon’s Head (Firehouse 12 Records), features Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet), Jon Irabagon (alto saxophone), John Hébert (bass) and Ches Smith (drums).

This will be the band’s final performance before going into the studio later in the month to record all new material for its forthcoming 2010 release on Firehouse 12 Records.

Darcy James Argue On WNYC’s Soundcheck Today

Today’s episode of the popular music talk show, Soundcheck, will feature a live performance by Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society.

Listeners in the New York area can tune in to WNYC 93.9 FM at 2:00 p.m., while those of us existing outside Metropolis can tune in live online or check in later to hear the segment via streaming audio.

Argue and his acclaimed ensemble headlined opening night of the ongoing New Languages Festival on Thursday and performed two sets at The Jazz Gallery on Friday.

They will next perform as the headliners at’s Brooklyn Big Band Bonanza at The Bell House on October 19th.

Mary Halvorson Featured On NPR Music

The Mary Halvorson Trio‘s December 22nd performance/interview on WNYC’s Soundcheck is now being featured on the NPR Music Web site.

The 16-minute segment includes Ms. Halvorson speaking about a number of career and music-related topics, as well as live performances of two tracks from the trio’s acclaimed 2008 debut, Dragon’s Head (Firehouse 12 Records).

Ms. Halvorson and her trio, along with special guests Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet) and Jon Irabagon (saxophone), will perform at Roulette in New York on Friday night.

Guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson and her acclaimed trio, featuring bassist John Hebert and drummer Ches Smith, will perform live on today’s episode of the popular WNYC radio program, Soundcheck, hosted by John Schaefer.

The group will be performing music from its debut CD, Dragon’s Head (Firehouse 12).
