Time Out New York‘s Hank Shteamer previews the Darius Jones Trio’s forthcoming debut in a post today on the publication’s music blog, The Volume.

“Each time we’ve seen Jones play, we’ve been seriously impressed with the sheer gut-level intensity he projects, whether he’s blasting out a furiously minimal riff or digging into a deep blues groove,” Shteamer writes. “So it pleases us greatly to report that Jones has hooked up with AUM Fidelity, a local label that knows plenty about the horn man’s brand of gritty free jazz, for his debut as a leader, Man’ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing), due out October 13.”

The post offers a streaming track from the record and discusses the trio’s forthcoming performance at AUM Fidelity’s showcase event at Abrons Arts Center on October 15th, which will also feature tenor saxophonist David S. Ware’s triumphant return to performing and the first performance of bassist William Parker’s acclaimed Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra in more than four years.
