On Friday, September 18th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will open its fifth annual Fall Jazz Series with a two-set performance by Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer Brandon Ross and his longstanding acoustic group, Blazing Beauty.
The band, which explores what Ross calls “future folk music,” is a flexible ensemble that can incorporate a variety of sounds, instrumental combinations and personnel, as demonstrated on its two recordings, 2004’s Costume and 2007’s Puppet, both on Intoxicate Records. This performance will feature Ross on guitars, banjo and vocals along with bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer JT Lewis.
“Few things in downtown music are as ravishing as Brandon Ross’s fluid guitar in full cry,” writes Time Out New York‘s Steve Smith. Known as a guitarist who combines “the linear facility and originality of Joyous Lake-era Pat Martino with the sheer decibels and cathartic abandon of [Sonny] Sharrock and the liquid whammy-bar articulations of Allan Holdsworth” (Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes), Ross is one of New York’s most unsung musical heroes.
An in-demand member of the city’s music scene for more than 25 years, he has worked with a long list of prominent performers from a variety of musical genres.
His credits include performances and recordings with everyone from singers Michelle Branch, Jewel and Joan Osbourne to genre-bending artists Arrested Development, DJ Logic and Me’Shell Ndegéocello to avant-garde pioneers Leroy Jenkins, Archie Shepp and Henry Threadgill. He is also Cassandra Wilson’s longtime music director.
In addition to Blazing Beauty, which has recorded and performed with cornetist Ron Miles and an assortment of special guests, Ross also leads the power trio Harriet Tubman featuring Lewis and electric bassist Melvin Gibbs, which Amazon.com’s Mitch Myers calls “a mind-melting display of inspired instrumental discourse between three very accomplished musicians.” His latest project is an acoustic string duo with Takeishi called For Living Lovers.
