On Friday, June 12th, Firehouse 12’s 2009 Spring Jazz Series will conclude with a two-set performance by Dutch jazz heavyweights, Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher. Led by pianist/composer Michiel Braam, and featuring bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Michael Vatcher, the group is touring North America in June and July, performing new compositions and welcoming a local improviser into the group at each stop. For this event, the trio’s late set will feature special guest cornetist, and Firehouse 12 Records co-founder, Taylor Ho Bynum.
“If only more jazz were as much fun as Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher,” wrote Dutch jazz aficionado Kevin Whitehead in the Chicago Sun-Times. “These guys make it giddy fun you can’t get enough of. This trio is a treasure.” Critics have also credited the group with “a persuasive, original sound grounded in the best traditions of Dutch improvised music” (Jazzwise), “some of the most confident and enjoyable piano work I’ve heard in recent years” (Dan Warburton, Paris Transatlantic) and “charting a path that is both avant-garde and instantly engaging and accessible” (Dave Lynch, All Music Guide).
Since 1989, the members of Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher have joyfully brought freedom and adventure to the performance of acoustic jazz. Like many Dutch musicians, the trio originally focused on the music of Thelonious Monk, but soon began performing Braam’s inclusive and irreverent compositions, with each musician playing an equal role in their realization. The band has released three CDs since 1998, including its most recent recording, 2006’s Change This Song (BBB), which features 18 short compositions, each named after an anagram of the album’s title.
