Grammy® nominated pianist/composer Taylor Eigsti will make his Firehouse 12 debut tonight as part of the New Haven venue’s fifth annual Fall Jazz Series.

This two-set performance is part of a short tour featuring his new trio with bassist Joshua Crumbly and drummer Aaron McClendon. The group is on the road working out material for its debut CD to be released early next year.

“Everyone who hears him seems to agree: Taylor Eigsti is the most exciting progressive-mainstream pianist to come along in a very long time,” writes AllAboutJazz.com’s Chris May.

Critics have noted his “intelligence, emotional depth, technical assurance and buoyant swing” (Robert Doerschuk, DownBeat), calling him “the real thing” (Kevin R. Convey, Boston Herald) and “an artist who has discovered his singular viewpoint and powerfully takes command” (Thomas R. Erdmann, JazzReview.com).

AllMusic.com’s Jonathan Widran adds, “There comes a time in every former prodigy’s life when he/she has to be judged by their output as an adult. Eigsti’s just keeps getting more compelling and inspiring.”

On Friday, October 30th, Grammy® nominated pianist/composer Taylor Eigsti will make his Firehouse 12 debut as part of the New Haven venue’s fifth annual Fall Jazz Series. One of the most acclaimed young musicians on the scene today, the 24 year-old has already notched an astonishing 16 years of professional experience.

Eigsti has been performing with jazz greats ever since he opened for his mentor, David Benoit, when he was eight years old. At 12, he was sharing the stage with Diane Schuur and opening for Diana Krall and Al Jarreau. His long list of accumulated honors, including multiple Grammy® nominations, magazine cover stories and appearances on NPR’s Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland, defy his young age while also demonstrating the respect his abilities have earned from his peers. His sixth and latest release as a leader, Let It Come To You (Concord Records), was released last year and he has since toured with such notable collaborators as Ambrose Akinmusire, Eric Harland, Julian Lage, Gretchen Parlato and Nicholas Payton. New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will launch its fifth annual Fall Jazz Series tonight with a two set performance by guitarist/composer Brandon Ross and his group, Blazing Beauty, featuring longtime collaborators Stomu Takeishi (bass) and JT Lewis (drums).

Jazz columnist Owen McNally previews the event in yesterday’s Hartford Courant.

Concerts will continue every Friday night (with a one-week break for Thanksgiving on November 27th) through December 18th when the series concludes with the final performance of the Daniel Levin Trio‘s American tour.

Firehouse 12 is an award-winning bar, state-of-the-art recording studio and unusually intimate music venue located at 45 Crown Street in New Haven’s historic Ninth Square District. For its semi-annual jazz concert series, the acoustically engineered studio space transforms into an incomparable 80-seat venue Nate Chinen called “the pre-eminent spot for improvised music in the region” in his March 2009 feature for the New York Times.

Firehouse 12 To Present The Julian Lage Group March 20th

Julian Lage by Jimmy Katz

On Friday, March 20th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will launch its 2009 Spring Jazz Series with a two-set performance by the Julian Lage Group.  Led by Boston-based guitarist/composer Julian Lage, this ambitious young quintet will be on tour celebrating the March release of his debut recording, Sounding Point, on the storied jazz label, EmArcy Records.  The group also features Ben Roseth (alto and soprano saxophones), Aristides Rivas (cello), Jorge Roeder (bass) and Tupac Mantilla (drums and percussion).

Lage’s long-awaited first release as a leader, Sounding Point features music ranging from through-composed original compositions to impromptu solo, duo and trio improvisations to covers of Miles Davis’ “All Blues”, Neil Hefti’s “Lil’ Darlin’” and Elliott Smith’s “Alameda”.  “I’ve been in a position where I could have recorded an album when I was younger,” he explains, “but was never in a rush because I wanted to allow these compositions to grow and evolve in their own time.  I really wanted to approach recording my first album from a holistic point of view and everything came together.  It was a great group effort.”

Only 21 years old, Lage’s career already stretches back an astonishing 13 years, when he first earned attention as the titular eight year-old guitar prodigy in the Oscar® nominated documentary film, Jules at Eight.  Since then, he has studied Dawg music with David Grisman, Indian music at Ali Akbar College of Music and classical music at San Francisco Conservatory.  His discography includes recordings with noted jazz artists Gary Burton, Taylor Eigsti, Nnenna Freelon and Marian McPartland.  His own band, the Julian Lage Group, features four like-minded contemporaries he met as a student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, and is joined on Sounding Point by special guests, Eigsti, Nickel Creek mandolin player Chris Thiele and banjo icon Béla Fleck.
